Over 30 million years ago, Sardinia began its formation. The second island of the Mediterranean has a territory dominated for more than 80% by hills and mountains. The rocks of volcanic and effusive origin characterize the territory and represent an important resource.
In Virginio Graniti we deal with the extraction and processing of granites, basalts and trachytes. The mission of VIR is to ideally connect the architectural culture and the materials that in 4000 years produced the nuraghi, the sacred wells and later the Romanesque cathedrals and the rationalism of the 1930s, to the demands of contemporary architecture.
Every age and every culture is characterized, among other things, by the ability to elaborate peculiar artistic expressions. Even the Nuragic civilization was able to express its identity through the artistic form applied to architecture:
basaltic rocks and granite were materials with which the art of this civilization has been perpetuated over time.
In the late Middle Ages, the countryside and villages of Sardinia saw a flourishing of Romanesque churches built using the best of basalt local and trachyte.
During the Fascist period, rationalist buildings of considerable importance were built in Sardinia where volcanic rocks in different types and with various processes were instrumental in enhancing their forms and preserving their constructive qualities.
